In isolated areas of the Chin mountains along the border of Burma and India, many people know very little about what democracy is and what it could be "good for" in their lives. After decades of oppression and exploitation by the Burmese military regime, it is hard for people to imagine that they could have a say in governing their country.

Organization Laizom Forward will visit remote villages with a two-day curriculum consisting of four topics: 1. Brief history of local administration; 2. Introduction to the principles of democracy; 3. Role of grassroots communities in democratic system; and 4. Introduction to the rights and responsibilities of the citizens. In each village 30 participants will be selected from among local administration, village elders, religious leaders and other key stakeholders. Special attention will be given to inclussion of women and youth among the workshop participants.

Progress Update

The project was completed successfully. BCP team visited two villages where the workshops took place. Local people told us that the program helped them to prepare for the upcoming general elections in 2015. In one village, democratic principles were used to agree on rules to prevent drug use and start a village emergency fund.
