Details

Young people from the refugee communities are active in many grassroots organizations. However, ofter they lack leadership skills or a good understanding and practical experience with leading in a democratic way. Delhi Mara Community will organize a workshop for youth members from a variety of community-based organizations. The training will focus on Democratic Leadership and explore how youth can engage constructively within and on behalf of the refugee communities in India.

About 30 Burmese youth from  New Delhi will participate in the workshop which will include 3 experienced speakers with leadership background.

About the Organisation

Delhi Mara Community (DMC) was established in 2009. DMC provides counselling to refugees facing socio-economic problems or sexual and gender-based violence. DMC offers awareness on how to access services of the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and other service providers. DMC is a member of the Chin Refugee Comitee in India.

Progress Update

The training took place on 25th July, 2014. Forty young people participated in discussions about types of leadership, roles of leaders in a transitional period or the need for women to participate in leadership on all levels of the Burmese society. The organizers reported that the first tangible result of the training was the election of the first female officer of the Mara Christian Fellowship Youth organization in early August.
