Many Burmese refugee women face depression in India, and are in need of counseling to help them deal with their problems, which include sexual harassment and abuse and physical assault. As there are few trained counselors, Burmese Women Delhi would like to provide counseling training to Burmese refugee women, to enable them to give counseling to other women in the community and help the entire community deal with the problems they encounter in their daily life in India.

In July, BWD will offer training to 35 women from the local Burmese refugee community. The organization will prepare the content of the training in June and invite participants.

You can help by contributing to the costs of preparing and running the training, including renting a venue, providing travel allowance for participants and honoraria for the trainers, communication, and stationery.

Additional Information

Name of Organization Burmese Women Delhi
About the Organisation

Burmese Women Delhi was founded in 2006 by 25 women from different communities in Delhi. The organization’s objectives are 1) to reduce violence against women, 2) empower Burmese refugee women in Delhi and 3) link with India NGOs and women groups. Main activities include training, a monthly women’s exchange, efforts to bring an end to violence against women, and networking with other organizations. Women who attended the training have improved their listening skills and counseling skills, and built up their self-confidence. They will now be able to provide counselling to other members of their community – including not only other women but also men and children.

Progress Update

July: In July, the Burmese Women Delhi organization held a two-day training for refugee women entitled “Counseling Skills & Confidence Building" in the Budella neighbourhood of Delhi. Approximately 20 women attended the training, which was given by a Canadian trainer.

BWD held its two-day counseling training on July 19 and 20 in the Zomi Community Hall in Budella, West Delhi. Approximately 30 women attended the training, which was given by a Canadian counselor and therapist with 20 years of experience. During the training, participants learned how to improve their listening and counseling skills and how to boost their self-esteem, and enjoyed the trainer's holistic approach that included spiritual reflection.

As discrimination and violence against women remain a major problem faced by Burmese refugee women in Delhi, this training builds women's self-confidence and empowers them to help themselves and others in the community.

Words from the donor

"Life as a refugee can be demoralizing as we have to constantly face poverty and many kinds of prejudice and injustice... Our aim was to give a morale boost and help (women) appreciate their worth and we hope we have done this."

"We believe that all the attendants benefited from the course and through them other members of the community who they will be counseling in the future. This will not only include women but also the men and children."

"Thank you for granting us the opportunity to hold this training for the benefit of our community."
